Evidence for the birth of the universe is raining down on you. It’s called the cosmic microwave background, and it’s had quite a journey. Born in the stupendous annihilation of matter and antimatter seconds after the big bang, trapped in the hot plasma of the expanding universe for 380,000 years, and then suddenly released when the universe cooled to the point that atoms could form, this echo of creation has been on an uninterrupted voyage through space for 13.7 billion years—until it reached you. The cosmic microwave background is just one of the many clues about the history and nature of our universe that make the science of cosmology a wondrous, fascinating, and philosophically profound field of study.

Cosmology: The History and Nature of Our Universe introduces you to the biggest story of all in 36 half-hour lectures that cover the origin, evolution, composition, and probable fate of our universe. This detailed and accessible course, presented by award-winning Professor Mark Whittle of the University of Virginia, incorporates more than 1,700 stunning illustrations.

The Perfect Time to Learn Cosmology

An expert on the dynamics of supermassive black holes at the cores of galaxies, Professor Whittle is an astronomer with a gift for making his subject vivid, understandable, and awe inspiring. For example, in explaining the vastness of the universe, he asks you to imagine yourself as a stupendous giant making billion-light-year strides through the cosmos, hour after hour. Even at this ultra-warp-drive pace, you would always find yourself in the middle of a uniform mist of galaxies with no end in sight.

Professor Whittle notes that we are the first generation ever to know in detail just how the universe came to be. Right now is the perfect time to learn cosmology, since researchers have just completed the work on more than a decade of breathtaking discoveries. The picture they have assembled is truly stunning in its richness and coherence and includes such findings as these:

The universe began 13.7 billion years ago in a hot big bang.
The geometry of the universe’s space is “flat,” supporting the theory of a cosmic origin in a rapid, inflationary burst of unimaginable speed.
Ripples frozen in space at the instant of inflation formed the seeds from which galaxies and all later structure grew.
The universe will expand forever at an accelerating rate.

Take an Intimate Look at the Universe

Einstein famously said, “The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible.” As Cosmology shows, the universe is comprehensible at a remarkably deep level in simple, intuitive terms. As the course unfolds, you are introduced to the major clues that have gone into deciphering the mystery of the cosmos. Some of these clues involve concepts at the cutting edge of astrophysics, such as dark matter, dark energy, and cosmic inflation. Professor Whittle introduces these and many other ideas with inventive analogies and then builds on his explanations.

For instance, one of the most extraordinary aspects of the cosmic microwave background is that it tells us the universe was ringing with sound during its first 380,000 years. It took a satellite measuring minute fluctuations in the microwave background to disclose this property of the early universe. But the story does not end there because scientists can say a great deal about this primordial sound and what it means:

Was it loud? Variations in the microwave background indicate that the sound was the approximate decibel level of front-row seats at a rock concert. (Professor Whittle picks Pink Floyd as a suitably deafening example.)

What’s the pitch? The primordial sound was 50 octaves lower than the range of human hearing. Just as larger organ pipes make deeper notes, so the universe’s “pipes” are cosmic in size and make extremely low notes.

Was it musical? As you hear in Professor Whittle’s different re-creations of the primordial sound, it had a harmonic complexity with a quality somewhere between a musical note and noise.

What does it tell us? The primordial sound included pressure waves destined to grow into the largest structures in the universe.

At Home in the Cosmos

There is also much to see in Cosmology. In addition to showing magnificent telescopic images, Professor Whittle illustrates his lectures with hundreds of informative diagrams, together with computer animations from NASA and other sources that give a three-dimensional perspective on the universe. You take a tour of our local supercluster, watch galaxies collide, and see “rivers” of galaxies flowing toward pockets of invisible dark matter, among other compelling simulations. Such a comprehensive, in-depth presentation is only available with this course and not in any classroom, book, or documentary.

Professor Whittle enriches his lectures with a number of simple equations, such as Hubble’s Law. But you don’t need to follow the math in detail, since he always restates what’s going on in plain English. Indeed, Professor Whittle suggests that we may be hardwired to understand the universe at an intuitive level, since we evolved on a planet embedded in an astrophysical setting and subject to the same laws of physics that apply throughout all of space and time. We are truly at home in the cosmos.

Prepare to Be Surprised

Nonetheless, prepare to be surprised by some of the startling ideas you encounter in Cosmology:

Matter and energy are only the positive side of reality. There is an equal and opposite negative side that resides in gravitational fields. Together they sum to zero, implying that the universe came from nothing.

The annihilation of virtually all matter by antimatter just after the big bang means that every proton and electron in your body has survived a game of Russian roulette with a billion bullets and one blank.

Dark energy has the crucial property of making the universe fall outward, rather than inward, which is why the expansion of the universe is accelerating.

Our universe may be only one of many, in what has come to be called the multiverse. If each of these universes has different laws of physics, we should not be surprised that at least one—ours—happens to have the parameters that are conducive to life.

Looking back on the wealth of recent discoveries about the universe that are covered in this course, Professor Whittle can hardly contain his excitement. “I wouldn’t be surprised if 500 years from now, these two decades will be seen as a period of breakthrough, not unlike the periods of discovery we associate with names like Copernicus, Newton, Darwin, or Einstein. … One might say that right now is when cosmology has finally come of age.”

O modo campanha se passa na Europa em 1943, época em que os nazistas dominavam boa parte do território. O jogador assume o papel de um soldado do exército dos Estados Unidos, que deve escapar do castelo Wewelsburg, na Alemanha, onde diversos rituais e práticas nazistas aconteciam. Como um soldadado estadunidense, sua missão é escapar e investigar as atividades da divisão paranormal dos nazistas.

Já o multiplayer de Return to Castle Wolfenstein é baseado em missões; tanto o Eixo quanto os Aliados devem ou cumprir uma série de objetivos ou impedir o outro time de fazê-lo. Cada um dos mapas traz uma série de objetivos primários — que consistem em explodir algo ou roubar documentos, por exemplo — e outros secundários — capturar pontos estratégicos ou bandeiras, por exemplo.

O jogador tem a oportunidade de relembrar grandes batalhas de O Senhor dos Anéis (Abismo de Helm, Minas Tirith, Minas de Moria) em uma perspectiva extremamente interessante de ação.

Jogando como um Archer, Mage, Scout ou Warrior, o gamer consegue embarcar rapidamente nas batalhas de O Senhor dos Anéis e tem a chance de alternar entre essas classes a qualquer momento do combate. Cada classe possui suas peculiaridades e habilidades, portanto cabe apenas ao jogador escolher o perfil mais adequado.

Ao combater com perícia, o gamer pode desbloquear grandes heróis, como Aragorn. Montar em criaturas como Ents, Wargs e Olifantes também é uma opção interessante durante a batalha. O agente secreto mais famoso de todos os tempos retorna aos games em Quantum of Solace. O jogo, inspirado no 22º filme do espião, apresenta diversas novidades em relação aos seus predecessores e abrange também momentos de Casino Royale, o predecessor da versão cinematográfica que impõe o título ao jogo.

Em Quantum of Solace você encarna James Bond, que é interpretado por David Craig nas telonas e nos consoles, e deve realizar diversas missões em locais como Bolívia, Madagascar, Miami, Londres, Montenegro e Siena. Para isso, você terá de combater diversos perigosos inimigos — agora com inteligência artificial reformulada — contando com um novo sistema de cobertura.

Cenas chave dos filmes, como a perseguição no alto de prédios entre James Bond e Mollaka, estão presentes no game, incluindo ações de contexto com o intuito de deixar o jogador ainda mais intrigado com o game. Em algumas partes do jogo, Bond terá de estrangular, socar e até mesmo desarmar alguns inimigos valentões. Para realizar estes tipos de eventos, o jogo oferece ações dinâmicas em que o player deve apertar precisamente os botões instruídos na tela.

Com foco em FPS (First Person Shooter), Quantum of Solace segue a mesma fórmula de seus antecessores, entretanto, algumas inovações foram adicionadas. Tom Clancy já é um nome famoso no mundo dos games. Mas dessa vez, a inovação é evidente, pois HAWX chega abordando um cenário diferente: combate aéreo. É isso mesmo, a Ubisoft agora chega com um game sob a licença Tom Clancy que envolve aviões de guerra e muita adrenalina.

O jogo é basicamente um simulador de pancadaria nos céus. Com mais de cinqüenta modelos diferentes de aeronaves, o game ocorre no ano 2012, partindo do princípio que o mundo é extremamente dependente das companhias militares privadas. O jogador é a única pessoa capaz de impedir um iminente conflito em escala mundial.

H.A.W.X (“High Altitude Warfare eXperimental squadron“) está repleto de aspectos técnicos modernos, como gráficos de altíssima qualidade e um sistema inovador chamado de ERS (Enhanced Reality System). Com isso, o realismo é fortemente presente nos quesitos bélicos do game. Além disso, o jogo conta com campanha cooperativa com até quatro gamers e com multiplayer online com até 16 jogadores.

Se O Clube da Luta foi um filme muito pacífico para você, The Club pode ser uma boa solução. O jogo, do gênero tiro em terceira pessoa, conta a história de uma arena secreta, financiada por milionários dos mais diversos ramos — desde traficantes até donos de grandes impérios da Internet — que convocam recrutas para pequenos combates particulares.

Estes gladiadores da Nova Era combatem em diversos cenários diferentes onde a única chance para sair é matar todos os outros adversários. O game não tme enredo senão isso, e seu objetivo é fazer o maior número de pontos em partidas com aproximadamente quatro minutos de duração.

Os oito personagens jogáveis foram criados em culturas totalmente discrepantes, e agora reúnem-se nos cenários mais inimagináveis, desde prisões em desuso até uma área abandonada de Veneza, passando por usinas nucleares e metalúrgicas abandonadas.

Armamentos vão desde pistolas de baixo calibre até um lança-morteiros portátil, passando pelas mais diversas espingardas, submetralhadoras e metralhadoras, além de três tipos clássicos de granadas: as de fragmentação, de fumaça e de flash.

Segundo uma lenda que os índios americanos costumavam contar aos colonizadores espanhóis, haveria na América uma cidade chamada El Dorado, onde todas as construções são constituídas de ouro maciço. Aproveitando o trocadilho, Helldorado (Hell é inferno em inglês) conta uma história muito mais realista sobre um velho oeste cheio de máculas, terror e medo.

O jogo conta a história de John Cooper, um típico cowboy, introspectivo e briguento, sempre disposto a sacar sua pistola por qualquer motivo. Porém, diferente dos outros personagens que permeiam a história, Cooper não é apenas bom no gatilho. Sua sabedoria e rapidez de raciocínio fazem dele o líder entre seus amigos.

O jogo lembra Commandos, um clássico da estratégia em tempo real, porém é ambientado no velho oeste, e você pode usar táticas muito mais sujas que as utilizadas no jogo da Eidos. Além de Cooper, o jogador poderá controlar Kate O’Hara, uma dama sedutora que usa sua beleza para enfeitiçar adversários, além do índio Hawkeye, e do mexicano Pablo Sanchez, bem como outros dois heróis com habilidades distintas.

Sins of a Solar Empire, ou simplesmente Sins, é um jogo de estratégia em tempo real (RTS) que promete mudar conceitos, preenchendo uma lacuna na jogabilidade tática e estratégica. A pretensão é grande de tal modo que a empresa desenvolvedora ousa talhar um novo gênero no mercado de jogos, chamado de RT4X.

Os pecados do império solar poderão ser desfrutados a partir de uma perspectiva onisciente nas batalhas (modo gods-eye, ou olhos de deus) com recursos de zoom, devidamente combinados com a visão tradicional RTS para a elaboração estratégica comum no desenrolar da partida. A exploração de Sistemas Solares vizinhos e demais possibilidades lembram uma espécie de Rome: Total War do futuro ou jogos do porte de Galactic Civilizations II.

Outra parte importante é a diplomacia, possível através de alianças com o intuito de fazer comércio, estabelecer rotas e formar verdadeiros mercados econômicos. Contudo, agir politicamente fica a cargo do jogador, já que é uma opção portar-se como tirano ou líder totalitarista do seu povo.

As raças são três: os negociantes da Trader Emergency Coalition (TEC), cujo objetivo principal é a pesquisa de tecnologia militar para auto-defesa; The Advent, donos de alta tecnologia no ramo psíquico e inclinados a agir sozinhos; e Vasari, superiores universais na tecnologia que buscam o estabelecimento de colônias para os seus. Os TEC e Advent são humanos, já os Vasari possuem uma origem ancestral alienígena que remete aos tempos mais remotos da existência.

Há 10 milênios os Vasari adotaram uma estratégia imperialista de conquista de galáxias e planetas até de uma falha que praticamente destruiu a espécie. Ocorreu o grande êxodo da raça.

Os humanos, antes retraídos, ganharam certa liberdade e se dispersaram pelo universo. A Trade Order foi formada, simbolizando a paz e prosperidade. Os domínios da Trade Order expandiram-se graças à busca por desenvolvimento social e científico.

Foi então que, num recôndito planeta, os Vasari e os humanos se cruzaram. Os embates foram cruéis, resultando num massacre dos humanos, atribuído à falta de tecnologia. Dez anos mais tarde, um grupo de humanos auto-proclamado The Advent resolveu buscar por vingança. Este é o primeiro capítulo da epopéia intergaláctica.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas

In the year 2010, Rainbow operatives Logan Keller, Gabriel Nowak and Kan Akahashi are on a mission in a Mexican border town. Their objective is to arrest Irena Morales, a terrorist ringleader. As the team reaches its landing zone in a helicopter, Logan fast-ropes down first but is separated from his group.

Logan fights his way through the terrorist-infested streets and meets up with Gabriel and Kan at an old Spanish church. After infiltrating a train yard and freeing a group of hostages, Rainbow eventually makes their way to a mine where Irena is hiding. However, after a surprise attack, Irena escapes and Gabriel and Kan are captured by terrorists.

Alone and armed only with basic equipment, Logan fights his way through an abandoned factory, eventually escaping by helicopter. He is then instructed to handle a related crisis in Las Vegas. He is dropped outside the Calypso Casino and links up with his new team: Michael Walters, a British demolitions expert, and Jung Park, a Korean electronics expert. The team clears out the casino and saves a group of hostages. They also rescue a NATO weapons researcher, who reveals that a second researcher has been captured.

Rainbow is then taken to a Chinese restaurant in order to rescue a kidnapped reporter. The reporter informs them that the terrorists are using a news van as a communications hub. Logan’s team destroys the hub, then flies out to rescue the kidnapped weapons researcher.
